Cutting Fluid Summary Steel
fabricating company makes thousands of railroad wheels by first sawing off
18" diameter steel blanks, then forging the blanks into wheels. Sawing
operation is done with 3 1/2" blades in several hydraulic bandsaws.
Operations wore out 40 blades per day at a cost of $147 each, or $5880
per day. Annual cost was about
$1,500,000 per year for blades alone. Prolong
Water Soluble Cutting Fluid was tested in place of the existing fluid, and blade
life was measured. Results The
previous best in the sawing operation was 35 cuts per blade.
With Prolong, the customer is now getting 50 cuts per blade, representing
an annual saving of $450,000.
